Overview For this special web series, The Walrus spoke with teens, parents, and educators nationwide, on what we get wrong - and right - about gender, intimacy, desire, and consent. My role was to establish the overall visual theme, design the web page, and to photograph then edit (Photoshop) all the visuals.
Because of the volume of content, we couldn't stack the articles like we did in Opioids. Instead, we tiled them, which tied into the education theme in making them look a little like cue cards. When you hover over the tiles, the card flips to reveal the subhead of the article title. This was both to provide more context, and for some interactivity on the page.
Above Close ups of three of the final tiles.
Drafts
Above There were many versions of the visuals before we landed on the final one. The first ideas centred around highlighter colours with handwritten or components that I drew. Overall, though, they either didn't feel editorial, were too messy, or would get too repetitive.
Above Stills from an earlier video version of the header - fun but ultimately took too long to get to the title card, was a little hard to read, and the video file was massive.
